What Are Coffee Pods

Coffee pods are small bags packed with some measured amount of ground and roasted coffee in special papers. They are similar to tea bags that are available in market. Coffee pods are used for instant coffee making. Coffee preparation without pods is laborious since it involves roasting, grinding to the right grind size, taking the exact quantity for the amount of coffee to be brewed and the process of boiling. Thus the time involved is more. Coffee pods are time saving and gives a balanced taste of the flavor since the coffee is packed in a pre calculated quantity.

The idea of making coffee pods was developed not long back by Illy Caffe in 1996 which then marketed its product to the coffee industry. The coffee pods are available in many standard sizes ranging from 44 millimeters to 62 millimeters. The amount of coffee filled is between 5 to 7 grams depending upon the size. Coffee pods are also available filled with different types of roasted coffee to give the drink a strong or mild taste. The coffee can be dark roast, medium roast or mild roast. The packing paper used is in the form of foils that prevent air and moisture from entering and affecting the taste of the packed coffee.

Many coffee machines have hit the market that takes coffee pods for making coffee. Senseo was the first to bring out one such machine. The problem of measuring out the exact amount into the machines has totally been eliminated. Since no filling of coffee in the filters is required now, the ritual of coffee making has become clean and tidy without any spillage and washing of the leftover particles from the machine. The machines work on dip and drink principle. Coffee pods are a great help in making espresso, the master drink of all coffee preparations. Since the making of espresso is difficult, the quality and quantity of coffee required is pre measured and packed in the coffee pods for using in espresso machines.

The popularity of coffee pods is due to its instant preparation. It just requires the coffee maker to be filled with water, placing the coffee pod in the receptacle and switching on. In a few minutes a cup of coffee is ready.

Coffee pods are also available in different flavors such as vanilla, hazelnut and Irish cream. These pods can be got from supermarkets or coffee shops. The price of each pod depends on the type of roast and flavor.
